Our Story

A shed, a record collection, and a very good flat white

Kraken Coffee is a small shed-style stand tucked down Estuary Road, a short walk from the South New Brighton beach and pier. It might be little, but it punches well above its size: rich, smooth coffee made with care, and a cabinet of warm pies and fresh pastries.

Behind the counter you will usually find Jimmy, the kind of bloke who will reopen after close because you missed out. The ceiling is wallpapered in old vinyl, hand-painted tentacles curl across the plywood, and there is a permanent laid-back hum to the place. It is a proper local, the sort people build their morning around.

The pies come up from Lyttelton and they have a bit of a reputation. One regular put it best after a lifetime of pies all over the country: one of the best they had ever had. High praise for a wee stand by the sea.

They sell out, so it pays to get in early or text ahead. Pair one with a flat white and grab a seat out on the deck. That is a South New Brighton morning sorted.

OMG what a delightful little find. The owner Jimmy was incredible as the shop had just closed however he said no problem what would I like. Now that's what I call outstanding service, going above and beyond! I've had pies all over the country and coffee around the world so was so shocked when this was one of the best ever. It really is a Kraken good place.

Kraken Coffee is a gem. Great coffee, unreal pies, and a proper laid-back vibe. Everything tastes fresh and done right, and the staff are genuinely friendly. Easy place to keep coming back to.

This little coffee spot might be small, but it delivers big on quality and friendly service. The coffee was excellent, rich, smooth, and made with care. The perfect place to stop before a walk along the beach or the estuary. Highly recommended!

It's a small shed-style cafe, but the coffee doesn't taste like it's from a small shop at all, it was really good. The pies were also excellent. I think the pies come from Lyttelton.
